As an Assembly Member, my vision for community security is to create safe and resilient neighborhoods where every resident feels protected, valued, and empowered. This vision is built on several key principles:
- Community–Centered Policing: I believe in fostering strong partnerships between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve. This involves community policing programs that prioritize open communication, trust-building, and problem-solving together.
- Prevention and Rehabilitation: Our approach to security should not be solely punitive. We must invest in preventive measures, such as after-school programs, mental health services, and substance abuse treatment, to address the root causes of crime. Additionally, rehabilitation programs should be available to help individuals reintegrate into society after serving their sentences.
- Equity and Inclusivity: Community security must be equitable and inclusive, addressing the unique needs and concerns of every demographic group. This means actively working to eliminate systemic biases and discrimination in the criminal justice system.
- Technology and Innovation: Embracing technology can enhance public safety. This includes the use of modern surveillance tools to deter crime, but also ensuring privacy protections and oversight to prevent abuse.
- Disaster Preparedness: Beyond traditional crime, community security encompasses disaster preparedness and response. We should invest in emergency services, infrastructure, and community education to ensure our neighborhoods are resilient in the face of natural or man-made disasters.
- Transparency and Accountability: Holding law enforcement agencies accountable for their actions is crucial. This involves establishing clear mechanisms for oversight, including civilian review boards and transparent reporting of incidents.
- Community Engagement: I envision a future where communities actively participate in shaping their own security. This means involving residents in decision-making processes, ensuring their voices are heard, and collaborating on solutions.
- Education and Awareness: Promoting public awareness and education about safety measures, crime prevention, and community resources is essential. Informed communities are better prepared to keep themselves safe.
- Support for Victims: We must prioritize support for victims of crime, providing them with the assistance they need to recover physically, emotionally, and financially.
- Sustainable Funding: Adequate and sustainable funding for public safety initiatives is vital to ensure that our vision for community security can be realized.
